What is Ultrasound and what information will it provide?
An ultrasound examination is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows internal body structures to be seen by recording echoes or reflections of ultrasonic waves. Ultrasound waves are considered to be safe. The technique is invaluable for the examination of internal organs. However, the technique is also extremely useful in evaluating heart conditions and identifying changes in abdominal organs.
Ultrasound Services we provide:
1) Abdominal Ultrasound
2) Thoracic Ultrasound
3) Echocardiography (Coming soon, please call and inquire)
3) Cervical Ultrasound
4) Pregnancy Ultrasound
5) Single or Double Organ Ultrasound
7) Ultrasound guided biopsies
Indications for ultrasound
- Unexplained weight loss
- Lack of appetite
- Fluid detection in the abdomen
- A mass or abnormality found during a physical
- Unexplained vomiting or diarrhea
- Urogenital problems
- Pregnancy
- Abnormal Bloodwork
- Preventative (catching problems early before your pet has any symptoms)
- Heart murmur or arrhythmia
- Abnormal radiographs
Things to know before your exam.
Although it is not necessary to have a referral, if you are able, please bring your medical records, referral paperwork, radiographs and bloodwork with you. You may also have your family veterinarian email them to us.
The ultrasound exam can take between 30-60 minutes, depending on what is being scanned. You may choose to wait or leave your pet, depending on your schedule and the schedule at the hospital.
Anesthesia or a sedative is not usually needed for most ultrasound examinations, unless biopsies are to be taken or the patient is frightened or fractious. The technique is painless and most pets will lie comfortably while the scan is being performed.
The hair will need to be shaved in the area of interest in order for the ultrasound images to be the best quality.
Please don’t feed your pet 6-8 hours before the exam unless told otherwise by your regular veterinarian. It is not necessary to restrict water. Patients with an empty stomach are easier to examine, because there isn’t the interference of food or gas in the stomach/intestines
